European Union Could Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Official Says

The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the US against five Europeans working on combating digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
