Larian Studios Announce a Latest Divinity, Declaring it Their Largest RPG to Date

The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, particularly after host Geoff Keighley shared a mysterious image of a strange statue. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very descent into chaos.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team is likely crafting a more action-oriented experience instead of another tactical title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

The Legacy of Divinity

The Divinity series is widely praised and arguably it sparked the recent resurgence of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, choice-driven narratives, and flexible progression—qualities that later found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is familiar fare, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is packed with unique possibilities only possible by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also notoriously open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Nearly every quest can be approached in a variety of manners, often in lateral fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that allow people to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this esteemed franchise.
