Our Premier Release of 2025: The Artist's Lux Claims the Premier Spot.

On the surface, this work might appear closer to a challenging scholarly challenge rather than a new popular music record from a musician who just had a previous single was a collaboration with an international pop star. Broken across 4 separate movements and voiced in 13 tongues, this is a dizzying classical-tinged work investigating female mystique, spiritual ascent, and bodily transformation, frequently through the prism of various saintly figures. The end of a relationship—a theme handled with raw openness on another major 2025 album—is launched skyward on this record, buoyed by the lush sound of a major symphony orchestra and work from a Pulitzer-winning songwriter among a vast list of contributors. The pure daring alone renders the work of contemporary artists seem quite small.

Transcending Academic Pretense

The fact that this album succeeds in avoid overly intellectual chin-stroking is almost miraculous, and complete praise going to Rosalía. Although this is not the first time project to alchemize historical sounds with the present, the ambitions are far greater on Lux, with the tightrope walk far more dramatic. What truly elevates her fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, rich compositions, and inherent drama, proves to be a core sense of joy. Much like the iconic Björk during her peak, you find a captivating sense to Rosalía's voice that pulls you up in its tornado. When she is breaking your heart apart, you still desire to stay alongside her through the journey.

A Signature Example of Joy

That exuberant spirit comes forth clearly on a stirring Italian song inspired by Saint Clare. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy over several minutes. Suddenly, all the music falls away, to reveal we hear a spontaneous laugh followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds in with comedic force. The track immediately segues to the frenetic track featuring galloping orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo appearance from none other than herself.

"The magic with Lux lies in you never exactly understand—or even want to predict—where you will go to next."

Almost every track concludes at a completely different place than how it began. One moment explores the transient trappings of celebrity over a featherlight symphony only to disintegrating in digital cacophony. Another, a cut echoing her previous rhythmic work begins off dark and sinister, with prowling vocals, before sudden traditional handclaps and an angelic chorus enter to smooth the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Between Experiment and Accessibility

Another crucial achievement on the album is straddling the line of radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. It is little coincidence that it has become her highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of key charts: its heart contains a collection of utterly undeniable pop songs. One track performed entirely in English swells around a chorus that feels to gather more and more infectious hooks while it spirals upward. This feat is repeated by another expansive track that expands and contracts, weaving multiple tunes as an intricate tapestry.

  • A dance-infused number charms with its jaunty, Disney-adjacent flair and a chant-along hook.
  • In its words, it aligns the pop culture impact of other breakup songs, lambasting a former partner described as an "emotional bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing have a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Top prize in being a motherfucker / You've the podium of disappointment."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album is pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A Art amid of impending artificial blankness. It rejects self-absorption in favor of glorious elevation, creating a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden treasure that takes patience to completely explore but doesn't feels like a chore. Where other big releases of the year seemed like a meager meal, this record is a lavish feast at which the guests around it, some tipsy on sacred wine, flutter between conversations about historical figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and common stories about hopeless partners. It is a contemporary musical from music's truly endlessly creative practitioner.
